PT Otsuka Indonesia Visit to Lawang Hydroponic Farmers

As part of the Otsuka Group, PT Otsuka Indonesia (“PTOI”) actively carries out Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) activities, this is in accordance with the Government’s mandate regarding the importance of CSR for a company. Literally, the implementation of CSR activities is a form of responsibility and social concern of a company to the community and the surrounding environment. Regarding what activities are chosen to carry out CSR, it is entirely the domain and policy of each Company.

Referring to the Otsuka Group Global Code of Business Conduct, it is appropriate for all Otsuka Group affiliates to carry out activities that support “Environmental Protection”. Therefore, in the implementing of CSR this time, PTOI provides full support to Farmers in the development and management of Hydroponic plants in a simple and practical way.

Hydroponics is a way of farming without using soil, using water media that contains certain nutrients and minerals to become a planting medium, generally done in a glass room using water media containing nutrients. Reported from the book Urban Farming Method by Rini Mastuti, the hydroponic method is a farming solution in overcoming land or soil limitation.

This method does not use soil as a planting media but is replaced by using water media containing certain nutrients and minerals to become a planting medium. Planting with hydroponic techniques is environmentally friendly method because the process uses natural ingredients and does not use excessive pesticides. Because the process is organic, vegetables and fruits from hydroponic cultivation tend to be healthier.

One of the substances and minerals needed by our body is found in vegetable plants. However, the source of vegetable plants needs to be our concern, because not all vegetables on the market can be declared healthy and free from pesticides.

One source of healthy vegetables can come from hydroponic plants. Hydroponic vegetables are vegetables that grow with the help of liquids containing minerals needed by vegetables to grow.

Unlike conventional vegetables that use soil media, hydroponic vegetables only need water containing minerals for their growth process.

The water used to grow these vegetables can also be recycled again. In addition to the need for water and minerals, hydroponic plants also need lights, filtration systems for water and air, and climate control devices. All of these components are needed to support the development of hydroponic plants.

Generally, hydroponic vegetables are grown in greenhouses or outdoors with limited space. Because hydroponic plants are very guarded in the way place of planting and do not require soil. Hydroponic vegetables do not use pesticides to protect the plants from insect pests.

On Sunday, 23 February 2025 President Director of PTOI, Mr. Tetsuya Yamamoto, visited one of the hydroponic farmers assisted by PTOI CSR. During the visit, Mr. Tetsuya Yamamoto was accompanied by Mr. Ryohei Fukuyama and Mr. M Nizar from the Jakarta head office. This visit was carried out as a from of PTOI’s Management concern for hydroponic activities carried out by the community.

The visit to the Lawang hydroponic farmer's garden was aims at seeing firsthand the hydroponic activities fostered by CSR PTOI. One of the things that invites admiration from PTOI is that even with limited space, namely on the second floor of their house, the farmers can still grow hydroponic vegetables well.

“This activity is very helpfull in motivating farmers to produce vegetables. Also to facilitate sales opportunities because a strong community has been formed. That's why PTOI contributes to creating ideal communication without a budget”, said Mr. Tetsuya Yamamoto.

“For me, this is extraordinary, where farmers assisted by PTOI can produce vegetables at home and this can provide income for them. In addition, the home environment becomes healthy because vegetables also produce Oxygen and the house looks more beautiful to the eye. So there are many benefits and it’s great”, said Mr. M. Nizar.
